Broadway Fire Department Members Receives Public Service Awards

“On January 1st, right down the road from the rescue squad, a wind-driven house fire put multiple lives in immediate danger. Heavy fire on the first floor was pushing straight up to the second-story bedroom where a mother was trapped, and conditions were deteriorating fast.

Because of outstanding teamwork and individual courage, every person in that house made it out alive.
  • Randy Palmer heard the call on his scanner, walked over from his house in street clothes, grabbed a line, and put water exactly where it needed to go – his quick actions gave us the knock we needed to make the grabs.
  • Andrew Dove and Ben Childs made entry, knocked down fire, and brought three people out of the basement who might not have found their way out on their own.
  • Tyler Miller and Chucky Meadows threw a ladder to the second-floor window. When the terrified mom started climbing out early and the ladder began to collapse, Tyler locked it off with the halyard rope and Chucky went up fast, pulling her to safety in heavy smoke and heat.
  • Lt. Campbell Williams ran command, directed the fire attack, helped steady that ladder, then – because we were short paramedics that day – jumped in the ambulance and ran advanced care all the way to the helicopter pad, using the cyanide kit and everything else in the toolbox to keep that mom breathing.
Tonight we’re proud to recognize these seven members with Sons of the American Revolution Public Safety Awards:
  • Randy Palmer – Fire Safety Commendation Medal
  • Mike Seekford – Fire Safety Commendation Medal
  • Andrew Dove and Ben Childs – Life Saving Medals
  • Tyler Miller and Charles “Chucky” Meadows – Heroism Medals
  • Lt. Campbell Williams – Emergency Medical Services Commendation Medal
The actions that morning turned what could have been a tragedy into a true success story. On behalf of the Fort Harrison Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, thank you for what you do every single day.
