Recently, Cadet Alexa Martinez from the Blue Streak Battalion of Harrisonburg High Scholl was recently honored for winning the statewide Enhanced Cadet contest sponsored by the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Ms. Martinez completed against thirty other SAR chapters and her essay “How JROTC has prepared me to me a Better Citizen” earned her a check in the amount of $1,000 and the opportunity to compete at the national level. Presenting her with the cash award and medal is The Fort Harrison Chapter President CAPT Ros Poplar USN (ret).

"On February 22nd the Fort Harrison Chapter SAR participated in a National George Washinton wreath laying Commemoration at his office in Winchester VA. Washinton used this office as a Colonel in the Virgina Milita and was responsible for protecting Viginia's 300-mile frontier form the French and Indians. The annual event was attended by numerous SAR and DAR Chapters."
The Annual Meeting of the Virginia Society was held in Glen Allen, VA on February 7-9 with 25 of 30 chapters attending. From our chapter, Ros and Joanne Poplar, Randy and Laura, Atkins, Brian and Gina Phelps, Jonathan Comer, and Norma Sheap all attended.
Our chapter was recognized and received streamers: Sponsor, Best JROTC Cadet 2024 Chapter Excellence Award, 2024 John Blair Public Safety Award, 2024 Participant-Public Service Contest, 2024 Participant, Youth Programs/Contest, 2024 Participant Flag Retirement Program, 2024 100% Participation-Flag Recognition Program, 2024 On Saturday President Poplar accepted the award for the State Enhanced Cadet which will be presented this week at Harrisonburg High School. During the meeting Randy Atkins was elected and installed as the 3rd Vice-President of the Virginia Society. Sabrina Dorman-Andrew has been named the Fort Harrison Sons of the American Revolution Citizen of the Year. Sabrina is the co-founder of New Creation, a nonprofit organization + fair trade shoppe on a mission to creatively counteract human trafficking with a local heart + a global approach. Sabrina works with more than 90 partner organizations from 5 continents to create dignified work for those rescued from, or vulnerable to trafficking around the world. Armed with the belief that education + job creation are powerful tools to overcome trafficking, The New Creation team is committed to developing concepts that make freedom possible. Education prevention in Harrisonburg, Rockingham and Augusta County has allowed our children to be better educated and protected. In the Bible, Jesus Christ gives us a beautiful and true example of divine compassion. He feels, and then He acts on behalf of the poor, the sick and helpless. Sabrina has the compassion of God surging in her veins as she steps into excruciating and dangerous situations to deliver women, children and even boys and men into freedom from sex slavery. Three Fort Harrison Compatriots were remembered at the Virginia Society Annual Meeting in Glen Allen, VA on February 8. Names of 44 Compatriots from Virginia were announced that departed since the last Annual Meeting February 2024. From our chapter, Lawrence William Dury, Jr. was honored as a Memorial Member. Christopher (Kirk) Newkirk Sheap, MD, November 17, 2024 and John Harvey Bell, December 31, 2024 were remembered. Kirk was one of three past-State Officers that was honored and on hand to receive a framed Memorial Certificate was Norma Sheap and daughter Kathleen Smith.
